An Opportunity To Rebuild - The Important Thing Isn't What Happens to you but What you do with what Happens to You

I truly believe that what is most important isn't what happens to us but how we view what happens to us. If something challenging occurs how we handle and ultimately survive it will have more to do with our perspective of the situation than the situation itself.

I was shocked when I discovered that my website,, had crashed. It came as a total surprise. When it sank in, I immediately noticed myself going through the steps of grief. First I denied it. I thought there must be another explanation. Then I got angry and started looking for someone to blame. Then I started trying to figure out how to make a deal or lessen the impact. Then I felt overwhelmingly depressed and weepy about the entire mess. Finally I came to acceptance. The website had crashed and was gone. The hosting company couldn't retrieve any of the lost files and there was nothing I could do about what happened.

Well, there wasn't anything I could do about what had happened, but there were lots of things I could do going forward. First the good news was I had an updated version of the site and it could be easily uploaded and fix the immediate problem. Also, some of the lost data, mostly my e-mail messages, were not as lost as we had first been told and they started reappearing slowly. Finally, I could take this opportunity to rebuild the site, adding new information and tweaking it to better fit the new direction I am heading. This was something I had wanted to do, but hadn't taken the time. Now the opportunity was being given to me to update and rebuild the site. Best of all, I now know the warning signs that something might be wrong.

Don't despair when everything falls apart. Look at the situation as an opportunity to rebuild stronger and better than before.
